Last week we thought we might be saying goodbye to Last week we thought we might be saying goodbye to our beloved dog, Bo, but as it turned out, with the help of some steroids, he rallied and is doing much better. Then, quite suddenly and unexpectedly, one of our chickens, Maggie, fell ill and died yesterday. It’s been quite the roller coaster over here.

Last night Bryan and Ella buried her. He gave her a simple but dear eulogy followed by some hugs and tears.

As I prepared dinner, I felt aware of the holy gift it is to witness and honor life, even the life of a chicken. And it reminded me that, though it is hard, it is good to contemplate death, to remember that this life is brief, but our spiritual life is eternal. It is now and it is forever.

I love these lines from Wendell Berry’s poem, Manifesto: The Mad Farmer’s Liberation Front:

“So, friends, every day do something
that won’t compute. Love the Lord.
Love the world. Work for nothing.
Take all that you have and be poor.
Love someone who does not deserve it…
Ask questions that have no answers.
Invest in the millennium. Plant sequoias…
Expect the world to end. Laugh.
Laughter is immeasurable. Be joyful
though you have considered all the facts…
Practice Resurrection.”

I want to be someone who practices resurrection, who takes life seriously but doesn’t cling to it.

I am lingering this spring in the mystery of Easter, in the beauty and hope and unknown implications of the resurrection, that in fact death precedes life.
Reading a little David Benner and Alice Fryling th Reading a little David Benner and Alice Fryling this morning, I noticed how often I begin to pray from a place of desiring control.

But if I slow down and get quiet, the presence of God invites me to experience His love.

And the love of God holds and heals me.

May our spiritual lives flourish and grow and come to bear in increasing measure in the here and now of our humanity.

Spiritual Direction and contemplative faith practices invite us to notice the presence of God, to slow down and join the gentle pace of the Spirit and begin to discover God in all things. There is a slight but significant difference when we approach our faith as living WITH God moreso than just FOR Him.
