I stopped the other day to watch this butterfly. S I stopped the other day to watch this butterfly. She fluttered from the street to the sidewalk until her dainty frame finally came to rest in the grass. The rhythm of her wings seemed to mirror the rhythm of her breath. It’s a wonder how such a fragile creature makes its way in this brutal world.

It’s a wonder how we make our way in this brutal world.

When our oldest daughter was just a newborn I can remember crying to my husband saying I felt like someone had handed me a delicate teacup and told me to carry it with me always everywhere and not to let it break. And if you know me, you know I am clumsy and often break things!

Life is fragile.

I am feeling it more acutely right now with the recent death of a dear friend and the ache of those he left behind. Life is really beautiful, but it is also really hard. Sometimes we are so busy surviving we can hardly be present to living.

I was reading in a book this morning and was struck by this simple but profound truth—that our spiritual formation is the primal reality of human existence.

We are so often asleep to our spiritual lives, yet every aspect of our lives, every experience, relationship, our thoughts and emotions, is spiritually forming us, shaping us. We are either becoming more spiritually alive and WHOLE or we are becoming more spiritually fragmented and disintegrated.

May we be open and watching, listening and receptive, that every part of this one fragile, hard yet beautiful, life we have would be leading us to greater wholeness, that we would be more wondrously, spiritually alive.

What is your favorite thing about summer? What is your favorite thing about summer?
Probably the most common prayer is some form of as Probably the most common prayer is some form of asking for help, and I imagine God is always glad when we come to him with our troubles and our cares.

It is good to turn to God. It is good remember we aren’t going it alone, that in all things, God is a partner.

But lately, I sense God inviting me to the slight but significant shift in perspective that flips that idea on its head. What if rather than seeking God to partner with me, my perspective and prayers changed to consider how I am being invited to partner WITH GOD?

What keeps bringing you to God, lately, asking for His help?
One of your kids? Your job?
Something troubling in the world?
A need for provision or discernment?
An unmet desire?

What if, instead of seeing the thing as ultimately YOUR care, You saw it as God’s? What is God’s heart in the matter?
What if you began to see God as the initiator and yourself invited to partner WITH HIM? What are his hopes, his vision?
Pause to consider, in his unhurried pace, the unseen and unknown ways he is patiently at work.

I am finding that as I take time to consider these things, to listen to the Spirt and imagine, I settle into a place of peace, a place of encouragement and hopefulness that unburdens me and has me asking better questions, like, “God, what is mine to do today in partnering with You?”
Rest + Return is a mini contemplative retreat we o Rest + Return is a mini contemplative retreat we offer four times a year in Charlotte, NC. We believe that when we make space for God, He is faithful to fill it.

And so, as the unrhythmed cadence of summer approaches, join us for a morning of quiet with space to reflect and notice God’s movement in your life and listen for the Spirit’s invitation.

All are welcome.
